So what's the secret to making better voices outside chams ?
First, I'll tell you this: to make better voice-overs, who's going to be distinguish of the majority of votes you hear, it's time to a voice that could be described as three-dimensional.
But what does this mean in concrete terms?
And I'll give you some concrete examplesusing the same text to give you a voice to 1size, to 2 dimensions and finally to 3 dimensions.
First of all, what would 1 1-dimensional voice be?
The 1-dimensional voice would be what we call in the jargon, the voice of theadvertiser. This voice that always speaks with the same yourthe same energy levelthe energy of seller as a certain radio commercials.
For example, a radio ad will sound something like this:
(Read with the announcer's tone. One dimension) We're offering you up to 50% off until October 1st. Yes, you heard me right, 50% discount.
And we would have the same toneeven if we make online learning videos. For example, I have a text here for people undergoing physical rehabilitation:
(Another example of 1-dimensional reading): "This exercise is designed to help the large joints in your hands. Make a fist with your right hand, squeezing as hard as you can. You may need to use the palm or side of your left hand to help, by pushing on your fingers. Hold this position for 5 seconds, then release and pause for 5 seconds."
A voice-over to two dimensionsis cleverest. The text and subject matter are clear, well-spoken and articulated, and there can be changes of rhythm and tone. In short, it's technically well done. In fact, a large majority of votes we hear are made this way.
I reread the same excerpt I read earlier, in the same way two-dimensional :
"This exercise is designed to help the large joints in your hands. Form a fist with your right hand, squeezing as hard as you can. You may need to use the palm or side of your left hand to help, pushing down on your fingers. Hold this position for 5 seconds, then release and pause for 5 seconds."
It's clear, it's well said. And it works. Most of the voice-overs we hear are done this way. I myself have done a multitude of them this way. But one day, we want to go further.
The objective that we must try to achieve when we do voice-overs, is to make voices in 3 dimensions.
And that meansmore to be skilful to make a text understood, we manage toreally address someone. We really view what we read, to feel and ultimately to convey an emotion to the listener.
I'll give you another example with the text from earlier, with a reading in 3 dimensions :
"This exercise is designed to help the large joints in your hands. Form a fist with your right hand, squeezing as hard as you can. You may need to use the palm or side of your left hand to help, pushing down on your fingers. Hold this position for 5 seconds, then release and pause for 5 seconds."
So I not only read the textbut I've tried view what I was saying, to do it as if I wereaddress really someone who means a lot to me. And in this case, it's a text for people who are undergoing physical rehabilitation, so I've also put some compassion. To make the listener really feel that I'm with her.
This is what gives more dimension to the narrative, so uhe 3rd dimension.
And when you can do that, the quality of our narration, of our voice-over is above average.
So, to sum up:
A one-dimensional narrativeit's a narrative like advertiser. We putnergythe energy of seller and texts, whatever they may be, when narrated in the manner of an announcer, are always said more or less the same way. always the same way with a few variations.
A two-dimensional narrative is a narrative that is technically well donewell controlledwhich can have changing rhythms and changes in your and it's efficient. And a large part of what we hear in voice-over is made this way.
A three-dimensional narrative goes even further. A 3-D narrative is one that is not only technically well masteredbut which more s'addressed directly to someone and tries to convey an emotion.
And when you do, you reach a superior voice-over quality. A voice that could be described as three-dimensional.
